Sports & Competition

Meeting Tuesday, June 3 @ 10:15 am in the Community Room

The benchmark is one of the following 4 titles:

  • Word freak : heartbreak, triumph, genius, and obsession in the world of competitive scrabble players by Stefan Fatsis. Follows the author, who was originally just a curious reporter and now a Scrabble fiend, as he becomes an expert Scrabble player and delves into the realm of Scrabble culture.

  • The teammates by David Halberstam, follows the friendship of Boston Red Sox teammates Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Johnny Pesky from their playing days in the 1940s to Ted Williams’ death in 2002.

  • Seabiscuit : an American legend by Laura Hillenbrand  was a breakout bestseller that went on to inspire a feature film and spur a bit of an industry. This story of a broken down horse and his trainer transformed sports writing and illustrates narrative nonfiction at its very best.

  • A flame of pure fire : Jack Dempsey and the roaring ’20s by Roger Kahn. A biography of the nation’s first celebrity heavyweight champ retraces the life of Jack Dempsey–hobo, roughneck, boxer, millionaire, movie star, and eventually, a man of compassion and generosity.

Please comment on this post with your second title choice to avoid duplication.
